It’s all about texture. Whether quilting totally by hand, by hand-guided machine quilting, or by computer-guided machine quilting, it’s still all about the texture. It’s what brings a quilt to life and conjures up feelings of warmth and comfort

For me, putting that texture in place, no matter how it is accomplished, gives me such a thrill each and every time!

I started as a hand quilter. I pieced my quilt tops by machine and then quilted them by hand in a huge hoop. With small children at home, the process took about six months, but I loved it! When I started seeing people using a machine for quilting, I vowed I would never do that! To my way of thinking, it wasn’t an authentic American quilt.

Over time though, I couldn’t help being impressed with the speed at which quilts could be finished and enjoyed. I also began to notice the creativity and artistry that could be accomplished with machine quilting. I started thinking I might like to try that. Turned out, it was a ton of fun! I got a small Longarm, then a big Longarm, then added a computer, then bought another Longarm. Now I’m a proud owner of two Bernina Longarms, a Q24 and a Q20.

Most of my customers leave the choosing of designs up to me and I have to admit, it’s my favorite part. I look for clues in the fabrics and the quilt pattern to help me choose the perfect designs. A quilting design that’s perfect for a reproduction quilt may not suit a more modern quilt. I really enjoy working with my customers to understand what they hope their finished quilts will look like.

It took an awfully long time to get here, but I finally found the job I love more than anything I’ve ever done before! Watching quilts come to life will never stop being a thrill!
